Bio

Dr Charlton was sworn in as Cabinet Secretary and Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy on 13 May 2025.

Dr Charlton has been the Federal Member of Parliament for Parramatta in New South Wales since the 2022 federal election. During his first term in the Australian Parliament, he served on several committees and was appointed as Australia’s Special Envoy for Cyber Security and Digital Resilience in July 2024.

Before entering Parliament, he was a successful entrepreneur, academic and economist. He is passionate about good education, having studied at the University of Sydney and Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar and graduated with a PhD in economics. He has since written two books on the economy and co-authored ‘Fair Trade for All’ with the Nobel Prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.

He also worked for former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd as his Senior Economic Advisor. In this role, he helped navigate Australia’s way through the 2007-2008 Global Financial Crisis and travelled across the world, working with other economists to save thousands of jobs and businesses.

While in government, he was appointed Australia’s senior official to the G20 Leaders Summits and represented the Prime Minister at the United Nations Climate Conference.

As an economist, he has worked at the London School of Economics, Oxford University, and the United Nations, and was named by the World Economic Forum as a Young Global Leader.

He went on to serve in senior roles with Wesfarmers and Coles, including as CFO for one of their businesses, and later built his own successful business, AlphaBeta. In 2015 his business was purchased by global IT consulting company Accenture, where he became Managing Director.

As the Federal Member for Parramatta, Andrew is deeply committed to advocating for his diverse community, focusing on economic development, social equity, and sustainability. His leadership is characterized by a forward-looking approach, integrating economic, digital, and community priorities to build a stronger future for all Australians.
