Bio

Tom helped establish the Australian Business Economists in 1980, from an idea developed by Stephen Tsung, an Economist at Commercial Banking Company of Sydney (CBC). Tom has been an active member of the ABE and was a longtime member of the ABE Executive Committee.

Earlier in his career, Tom joined J B Were and Sons, Stockbrokers in 1963, and transferred to Capel Court Corporation, a merchant bank, in 1969. Capel Court Securities was an authorised dealer between the Reserve Bank and licensed banks and Tom developed close working relationship with the central bank, private banks, major corporations, building societies and credit unions.

In the early 1970’s funding of corporations changed from overdrafts, debentures, and unsecured notes to borrowing via commercial bills, bank bills and promissory notes. Tom was at the forefront of these new forms of funding and became Executive Director of Capel Court. It merged with the Royal Bank of Canada and then United Permanent Building Society, via one of the largest ever shareholders’/depositors’ meetings, at Parramatta Stadium, with 20,000 attending.
