Autism, the NDIS and the Tough Budget Realities
Autism has been a prominent topic this year, with rising prevalence and diagnosis rates in Australia and a growing proportion of participants in the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). The NDIS has consistently been the fastest area of government expenditure since its inception, and a recent review has suggested a range of changes to try to rein in spending. A potentially controversial recommendation has been the removal of children with “mild to moderate” autism from the NDIS, with states now responsible for alternative support programs.
Internationally, the conversation has also intensified, with the U.S. Secretary of Health proposing efforts to find a “cure” for autism and revising medical guidance around so-called prevention measures.
In response to these developments, the ABE will host a panel discussion exploring:
- Our evolving understanding of autism, its prevalence and presentations, and consequences for government spending, including within the NDIS
- The future of the NDIS and broader health expenditure in the context of fiscal constraints, an ageing population, and rising mental health challenges in general.
- Is the NDIS design fundamentally flawed? What alternatives might deliver both better health and fiscal outcomes?
- Further possible reforms in the NDIS and more broadly for both children and adults living with autism.
The panel will be moderated by Nicki Hutley. The panellists include Professor David Cullen, Dr Angela Jackson and Professor Steve Robson.
Tickets are $30 for members and $35 for non-members, with $5 from each sale going as a donation to Autism Australia.
Light lunch and refreshments will also be provided.
